Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em: Series 2, Episode 5 (Summary)
Father’s Clinic
First Aired: 20-12-1973
Written by: Raymond Allen
Father’s Clinic is the penultimate episode of the second series of Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em and Frank Spencer keeps himself very busy in this episode. He begins by having a little trouble in the darkroom and loosing his job at the photographers.
So, jobless once again, Frank goes home and does some work on the garden gate.
The gate is still in the kitchen the next morning when Betty comes down for breakfast. In between holding up the gate and attempting to have a cup of tea Betty tries to persuade Frank to go the maternity hospital and attend the father’s classes. Frank is less than keen. Last time he went they were showing rude films and he was too embarrassed to go in until five minutes before the end of the class. Then when he did eventually go in he took one look at the screen and fainted.
Betty insists that it is important for Frank to attend and so he agrees to go later that day. When he gets there, however, he is too embarrassed to enter on his own and looks for someone to go in with him. “Excuse me,” he asks one man. “Are you one of us?” The man smiles and introduces himself as Charles and he isn’t ‘one of us’ he is ‘one of them‘ and if it was not for a passing policeman goodness only know what would have happened to Frank.
When Frank eventually does manage to pluck up the courage and go in, he has missed so much of the last class that he is holding everyone else back and so it is not very long before chaos erupts. He does not mean to be but that Frank Spencer is a menace wherever he goes.
Later still, Frank accompanies Betty and two of her friend’s children to the Zoo. The girls don’t really take to Frank, but when he gets inside the cage with the monkeys and begins chasing them around to try and get his beret back the girls get such a laugh out of it that decide that they like him after all.
By the time they all arrive at the roller skating rink the girls think Frank is very funny and don’t even want to skate. They are more eager to sit and watch Uncle Frank, who is having all kinds of problems and ends up loosing control, going straight through the door, and getting into trouble on the roads. Roller skates and Frank Spencer certainly seem to be a dangerous mix.
