Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em: Series 2, Episode 1 (Summary)
Cliffhanger
First Aired: 22-11-1973
Written by: Raymond Allen
In the first episode of the second series of Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, Frank is looking after his neighbour’s chickens while she is on holiday, but he has been having a little trouble and the henhouse, not exactly looking its best. It is now leaning a little to the right, but Frank tells Betty that it will be all right; if he puts the chickens over to the left it will balance it out.
Frank feels that his recently gained experience in chicken care qualifies him for better things. He has applied for a job as a salesman with and agricultural suppliers. If he gets the job he will also get a company car which means that he and Betty will be able to use it on a weekend and Frank will be able to take Betty to the seaside. There is a little problem however, Frank has not passed his driving test yet, so if he gets the Job Betty, who does have a licence, will have to do his rounds with him.
Frank manages to get the job and the car and so, at the weekend, he and Betty head for the coast to have a picnic at Frank’s mother’s favourite spot, on some grassland on top of a cliff.
Things are looking up for the Spencers and Frank hopes that, in the future, he will be able to do things with chickens. Betty tells him not to rush things though and to concentrate on the job that he has got. She also announces, rather loudly, that she wants a baby. “Just try and be patient,” Frank tells her. “I’ll see what I can do.”
The Spencers are not the only people picnicking at Frank’s mother’s favourite spot. Quite a few other couples are parked there as well. When the weather turns nasty, though, everyone else leaves and Betty and Frank are left all alone at the top of the cliff. I did mention, didn’t I, that Frank and Betty were parked at the top of a cliff? What are the chances, do you think, that Frank will have a little problem?
“Betty. do you promise you won’t be angry with me?”
“I suppose we’re stuck again are we?”
“We’ve got a bit of trouble, yes. You won’t panic, will you?”
” ‘Course not. What is it?”
“You’ll keep calm?”
“Is it the back wheels again?”
“Mmmmm! They’re over the edge.”
Betty looks out of her window and when she sees that they are rocking on the edge of the cliff she panics. To make matters worse, the man on the radio chooses just that moment to deliver his warning of gale force winds.
